1) Zinc as Zinc Gluconate

7) Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) seed extract 80% silymarin

And then there was my best friend at the time who one day decided it would be funny to put notes hanging in my locker calling me names like an “ugly homeless dog.” 

The humiliation I felt as I read those notes and saw my crush and a number of other kids laughing at the time was a pain I just can’t really explain.

 I wanted to curl up in a ball and never go back to school. 

I had a group of older kids creepily follow me home in their car, lingering back as I walked home from the bus stop for about ¼ mile then suddenly sped up and threw their soda cans out the car window at me. 

At the time as a young child, I had no idea what depression was.

Now, looking back I know I was depressed even as a child. 

I felt utterly alone. 

Truth be told my struggles started long before this in middle school and high school where my insecurities started to brew because of constant bullying. 

I’ll never forget that brown haired, brown eyed boy that cornered me in the playground at recess and tried to utterly kick my butt just because he thought he was being funny for his friends. 

I had friends. If you could call them that, but I also had my younger sister and brother. 

I decided to lean on my family. 

Perhaps they could help me feel less alone. 

I figured if I can’t trust other kids at school to be my friends maybe I can count on my sister who was closer in age. 

She didn’t want anything to do with me. 

I tried to do a dance class with her and her friends one year and I remember her making such a stink to my parents about it. 

 I spent many years trialing supplements, doing research. 

After graduating with my undergraduate degree it was hard to find a job in the current market. 

I worked a minimum wage job in the healthcare field for almost 3 years before starting graduate school and getting my doctorate. 

I focused on work and expanding my knowledge base.

Here at this job, I met some really great people. 

I started learning more about fitness, nutrition and started to feel like I meant something to someone. 

I felt like I was making a difference in the patients' lives I was working with and I for the first time started feeling better about myself. 

I was in great shape at this point in my life. 

Throughout college I started dating someone who was incredibly sweet. 

OR SO I THOUGHT. 

Over time he started putting me down. Belittling me to make himself feel more superior for some reason. 

It started out really great and I had a hard time understanding how something so good could change so quickly. 

He had a drinking problem. 

Did not know when to stop drinking when out with his friends. 

Ultimately ended up with a DWI, but worst of all he ended up slamming my arm in his car door and slapping me across the face one night when he was belligerent drunk. 

I learned pretty quickly how to handle him when he had been drinking. 

This time it was different.  

I’ll never forget the look in his eyes that night. 

His eyes staring as if he were looking right through me with such hate I had never seen before. 

Unfortunately, by the time I realized this I had already moved in with him to save on room and board throughout undergrad.

I worked full time and went to school full time throughout all of graduate school. 

This was incredibly stressful and difficult. I missed so many family functions and again felt very much so alone. 

I lived off sweets, carbs, caffeine; the same easy grab and go foods I relied on throughout undergraduate. 

Basically, anything that was quick and easy to get my hands on because I had such little time to focus on my well-being while trying to get through school again. 

I started to gain weight again, because I was eating so poorly and this time it was hard to get the weight off. 

At this point I was getting older. My metabolism was getting slower. 

My hormones were completely out of whack due to the immense amount of stress I was under. 

I powered through and graduated with my doctorate! I was so incredibly proud! At the same time I started to feel a little behind. I had gotten married, finally had the job of my dreams, but I was now in my 30's and had not had my first child yet. My struggles continued. 

As I got older, and my husband and I were trying to have a baby for the first time, I was diagnosed with PCOS, which essentially can cause a hormonal imbalance and make getting pregnant extremely difficult. 

I probably had this hormonal imbalance all along and it was finally diagnosed! 

It took me a year of trying and testing to find this out before getting pregnant with our daughter. 

It should have been diagnosed so much sooner. It probably would have saved me a lot of heartache and disappointment. 

Again, I started to lose faith in my doctors and switched practices. 

I’ll never forget one of my husbands’ good friends coming to visit and making a joke about my clothing being from a plus size store. 

I felt so humiliated and embarrassed. I mean, he was not wrong. 

I had gained a lot of weight since I had last seen him. 

I had already felt insecure and bad about the way I looked on my own. 

For someone to point it out just made me feel worse.

As I got older, weight loss was getting harder and harder.

I was going down a very bad path all around. 

I lost all interest in being intimate with my husband because I felt disgusted with myself.

We live away from our family, found it hard to find a sitter we could trust which made making time to work on our marriage very challenging. 

We both had physically demanding full time jobs on top of being new parents.

We finally got my parents to come visit and watch my daughter when she was about 18 months old for our friend’s wedding. 

We were excited to get away, but my daughter decided it was a good week to have a sleep regression. 

Over the years my depression just kept getting worse without me being even aware I was suffering from it.

He felt like a stranger because it had been so long. Did he still find me attractive despite the way I now look?

It was nice to have time just him and I again. But, as the night progressed the fatigue set in and I sat down for a break. My husband seemed fixated on another woman. I felt devastated inside. As the wedding comes to an end we head back to the hotel and the hotel bar remains open for a couple more hours.

 I told my husband I’d set my alarm and come down to the bar and find him after I slept for 30 minutes.

I was not overreacting.

I remember feeling trapped like I had to try to make the relationship work because he was supporting me. 

I was still completely away from family and had no one else. I stuck it out way too long.

I Dealt with betrayal after betrayal, heartache after heartache. 

This situation definitely contributed to my weight gain throughout undergrad. 

I started to feel helpless. 

Had an immense amount of anxiety and fear. 

I think this was the first time my depression progressed to this level of loneliness. 

Mind you I go to my physical exams with my physician yearly. And I’m pretty open to them when they ask me questions. 

I still at this point had no official diagnosis of depression, despite all the signs being there. 

I dealt with this horrible relationship the remainder of my undergraduate coursework. 

FINALLY DISCOVERING MY PASSION FOR HEALTHCARE AFTER MY CAR ACCIDENT IN UNDERGRAD

Yup, you thought things couldn't possibly get any worse, right? 

I know I did. I was WRONG! 

Some guy, looked down for a split second and rearended me in my car at high speed. 

MY CAR WAS TOTALED. I WAS SO SHAKEN. TERRIFIED EVEN.

MY WHOLE BODY HURT. IN A SPLIT SECOND MY LIFE CHANGED. 

I started suffering from upper back and neck pain shortly after. 

Actually, woke one morning and my neck was so spasmed, it was stuck sideways, and I could not move it. 

MY STRUGGLE CONTINUED THROUGHOUT HIGH SCHOOL 

I just wanted a friend. 

My parents forced her to include me which did not make me feel better. 

I still felt very much so alone. 

I spent a lot of days locked in my room crying, but always tried to find a way to pick myself up. 

I continued to try to be a part of my sisters’ life throughout high school and she told me flat out I could not be friends with her friends. 

She was always so protective and welcoming with my brother and my cousins. 

Our relationship was just very different. 

Once high school was over, I wanted out in the worst way. 

I wanted a complete change. 

For too long I did not feel as though I belonged. 

I felt immense pressure from my family to succeed and do well being the first born and basically felt as though I just did not belong anywhere in my family’s lives otherwise. 

I went to school out of state about 5 hours from home.

At this point I still had no idea what I wanted to do. 

Had no idea I was suffering from depression, hormonal imbalance etc. 

IT WAS TIME TO ESCAPE THE ROUTINE AND FIND FREEDOM!

I was actually getting my period every two weeks and the doctors answer was to put me on birth control. 

No one was able to properly diagnose me. 

They never really ran any tests at this point, just put me on the pill.

Freshman year was a pretty great year. 

I Had to Break Free: Rediscover My Worth

Pain killers did not help. Muscle relaxants did not help. Physical Therapy did not help. 

All that MONEY and TIME WASTED! 

I had herniated discs with nerve impingement, which according to my doctor, required surgery OR I'd never be pain free again!

This condition can disrupt the normal functioning of the nervous system and the flow of information between the brain and various parts of the body. 

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

MY RESEARCH CONTINUED THROUGHOUT GRADUATE SCHOOL 

I would get my period maybe once every 3 months and I could never predict when it was coming. 

I saw my physician and they said it was pretty normal but wanted to check my thyroid considering my weight gain and expressing my difficulties getting the weight off. 

My thyroid was fine. So again, nothing was done.

​Looking back and knowing the warning signs I know I was depressed throughout this process. 

I can’t tell you how many people kept saying “when are you going to have a baby?” 

I had someone even say to me “well, what are you waiting for dear, you aren’t getting any younger.” 

Meanwhile, I wanted nothing more than to get pregnant. 

I was buying ovulation tests, reading multiple books on ways to improve ovulation and hopefully increase our chances.

My weight struggle, lack of sleep and endless battle against depression led me into a state where I’d have outbursts of anger

Asked everyone if they had seen him. 

No, one had seen him in some time. 

People were checking outside for me, texting friends of friends.

Finally, I decided to go floor by floor and listen for his voice. 

I found him. 

I found him in the hotel room with this other woman. 

They were both fully clothed at this time and to this day I don’t know if anything happened between them, but unfortunately my depression spiraled even furthermore as a result. 

Mind you I still did not even know I was depressed! 

I had never been diagnosed. 

And not to mention the embarrassment, the eyes staring at me the next morning. 

Everyone knew where I had found him. I was a mess. 

I went home with my husband told my parents we had an amazing night and put a smile on my face as always. 

Over the years I had gotten really good at pretending to be happy. 

I didn’t want them to know. I was fine. 

In reality, I was in so much pain. 

But at this point in my life, I felt defeated. 

Time passed and at a certain point I decided I needed to try my best to move on and make things better for the sake of our daughter. 

My depression and weight gain was still an issue but I tried to make an effort to be more intimate with my husband. 

Next thing I know we are pregnant with our son. 

AND THEN THERE WAS COVID-19

This poor man was about my father's age, and as I came around the bed to move equipment and lines around in preparation to turn him, I noticed something foul coming out of his mouth. 

I kid you not, this poor gentleman had feces coming out of his mouth. 

I had this immense amount of sadness come over me just then. 

I mean I had seen other patients suffering throughout the pandemic and it was awful all around, but this. 

This particular patient I could not hold back the tears. 

I will never forget this gentleman. 

No one deserved to go out like this. And later that week I saw his family, crying and saying their goodbyes. 

To this day I get chills talking about some of the experiences I had to endure. 

Unstoppable Dedication: Despite My Own Struggles

I was still suffering from undiagnosed depression, marital problems, emotional outbursts, blood pressure and cholesterol issues, pain. 

My life was literally spiraling down a crap shoot. 

Eventually, daycare opened back up, but they’d still shut down two weeks at a time with every little exposure. 

So again, we had to struggle to find childcare. 

I missed a lot of work. So did my husband. 

Now we had a financial strain on top of everything else causing further marital problems. 

And eventually I got a verbal warning that I needed to be at work, or they would find someone else that could be. 

Times were so incredibly hard for everyone in so many different ways, I know this to be true. 

But I think at this point in my life I had hit rock bottom. I had endured all that I could. 

This is when I had a fire lite inside me. I was done. 

I wanted to take control over our lives again.

It was time I took my life into my own hands.
